Know your products limitations.  Silver Halide printing vs. Press Products & Ink jet.

The times are changing and we as the professional photographic community must keep informed so that we can provide our clients with the best that technology has to offer.  As Nulab expands it’s product base, our photographers need to understand the limitations of the variety of printing that we now offer.

Silver halide (traditional photographic) printing offers the tightest control over final end product of all current forms of image printing that Nulab offers.  R-G-B printing has over a hundred years of R&D resulting in incredible control over a chemistry based process that allows for consistently tight reproducible results especially for normal colour images. Variability in prints exist for products like B&W and toned printing as single 1 point variation in either paper batches or chemistry. It is possible that  prints won’t match when mixing sizes or if not printed at the same time.   Nulab offers the “all to one printer” option as a solution to overcome this factor.  However – the “all to one printer” is not necessary for most colour enlargements – as excellent reproduction is the “norm” even years down the road using traditional photographic printing.

Both Press products and Ink jet images are wonderful options for many products but the final results are dictated by the current batch of inks or dyes.  Just like your printer at home gives results that are directly tied to the latest batch of inks and papers you are using, so are any cmyk print products.  For best results order at the same time – in batches  to ensure consistency – as the results can vary from run to run as the inks are changed and the paper stocks are replaced.

One final reminder on this subject – any cmyk products will print darker than the same file printed photographically.  Images printed with inks/dyes or pigments have a “cumulative” effect which results in your final image appearing 3-5% darker than the same image printed photographically.   When in “doubt” it is best to request colour corrections to your image.  This leaves the corrections for the final image in the hands of the team that deals with each individual product's end results – day in and day out.  Nulab’s colour correction staff are trained to understand each printing process and what is needed to give the optimal end result.
