Step 1 - Draw a Rectangle

Open your image in Photoshop, reset your colour palette (Ctrl+D), Select the rectangle shape tool (Shift + U until the rectangle tool appears). Draw a rectangle of any size in the middle of your image.

Step 2 - Fill to Zero, Add Stroke

Set the Rectangle fill to zero, double click the layer to bring up the layer styles, or right click on the layer and choose 'Blending Options' to access the same window. Click on Stroke to bring up the Stroke Options, set the Position to 'Inside' (Important!), adjust the Size slider to taste.

Some other handy tips;
  • Lost too much of your image? Alt+DoubleClick on the Background layer to unlock, Ctrl+T to transform and resize to bring back some of the overlapped image.
  • Get Creative! Instead of using colour to fill your border you can use patterns. Double click on your rectangle layer and access the stroke settings, change the 'Fill Type' to Pattern and add some wonderful effects.
